Toys“R”Us Canada hosts a regular event called Tthe Great Trade-In event – a national campaign targeted at removing used and potentially unsafe baby products from Canadian homes. This event is taking place from August 5 to August 21, 2011.

Seventy-one per cent of Canadian parents are currently using or have once used “hand-me-down” or used baby products, according to a recent survey commissioned by Toys“R”Us, Canada.* Additionally, more than half (52%) of these Canadian parents used the products without first checking to see if they had been subject to a manufacturer’s recall.
Toys“R”Us, Canada is once again urging parents to remove potentially unsafe products from their homes through the “Great Trade-In” event. The “Great Trade-In” event is designed to draw attention to the fact that certain used baby products can carry potential hazards, but are still in circulation and are not the best candidates to be handed down or resold. The program encourages parents and caregivers to bring their used cribs, strollers, car seats and travel systems to their local Babies“R”Us or Toys“R”Us store in exchange for 20 per cent savings towards the purchase of a new baby item, in any of these product categories, from participating manufacturers. The “Great Trade-In” event begins on Friday, August 5 and runs through Sunday, August 21 at all Babies“R”Us and Toys“R”Us retail locations nationwide.

The products available for trade-in through the “Great Trade-In” event should be of particular interest to Canadian parents, as:
-40 per cent currently use or have once used a hand-me-down or previously owned crib;
-31 per cent currently use or have once used a hand-me-down or previously owned stroller;
-30 per cent currently use or have once used a hand-me-down or previously owned car seat.
In May 2011, the “Great Trade-In” event saw the return of over 3,000 used and potentially hazardous items, and since the program was introduced in May 2010, has responsibly recycled and disposed of over 10,000 previously used pieces of baby equipment across the nation. Some items returned were cited as missing parts or being visibly damaged. However, there are still potentially dangerous products in the marketplace and parents may not even realize they are using them.
According to the survey, three in five (59%) Canadian parents are not fully educated on all the Canadian regulations surrounding baby product safety. For example, 30 per cent of respondents were not aware that baby walkers were banned in Canada, 20 per cent did not know that child seats have expiry dates and 28 per cent did not know that all child seats on the Canadian market must bear the National Safety Mark. Additionally, 31 per cent of Canadian parents were not aware that cribs made before September 1986 do not meet current safety regulations and should not be used.
Health Canada, which regulates child care equipment nationwide, cites concerns on products that may have been affected by recent enhancements in Canadian safety requirements.
