When helping a child make the transition from having 100% of your support at bedtime, encouraging independence using a transitional item commonly referred to as a "lovey" can be a great option.
Transitional Items
It is important to choose a transitional item that fits your child's size and age as to not overwhelm them, and for safety. I have seen a large variety of loveys that have even included a
reusable breast pad, a sock, and a pair of dad's pyjamas bottoms. One of my favourite transitional items is the Silkie from Prince Lionheart. I find them to be not overly heavy for little ones and they have the added value of having 2 different tactile feels: silk on one side and micro fibre on the other. To encourage the relationship with a transitional item, try giving it to them when you feed them, in the stroller, as well as in the car seat.
You can also help the transition by putting the Silkie in your bra for a day so it has your scent on it, then offer it to them. This gives your child the comfort of your scent. It is important to remember that if your child does become attached to a transitional item, make sure you have duplicates of it. Having duplicates is KEY! No matter what the lovey is! I've made sure my babies had a stuffie in their bed from early on (even just in the corner) so that they always saw it. Once they could cuddle it, that is the only one I gave them. My daughter was attached to her teddy by 7 months. My son is growing attached to his monkey, although he loves his thumb!!
